Jiří Šigut (1960) is a unique and distinctive artist whose work emerges not only from his fascination with what is happening around him, but also from a need to reveal different insights into how phenomena are constituted. A key dimension in his work is the notion of immediate presence at the moment when a work of art is created and “establishes” itself within temporal horizons. Jiří Šigut’s work begins by asking: where am I, and why am I here? Building on this existential questioning, he interrogates himself and his chosen medium. The presence of the artist in the midst of transformative processes redefines the traditional, utilitarian perception of photography as a tool for technical reproduction. For Šigut, photography is a fundamental, unique record of something experienced. His connection with space and time possesses a ritualistic character. It cyclically repeats contacts with the material of space-time, which constantly takes on new, surprising forms.
