This work dates from the early part of Merta’s career, in which he still produced abstract assemblages. Although this assemblage is constituted similarly to the 1984 self-portrait, it displays a clear shift towards the use of striking colours in order to express a strong emotional content. The expressiveness of the image is strengthened further by the coarse impasto brushstrokes, which were applied straight from the tube in the lower part of the surface. Although Merta’s works from the 1980s are most often associated with land-art, his portfolio from this period also included neo-expressionist assemblages.
