PROTIMLUVFEST

17. 10. 2024

3–10 p.m.

The 18th year of the PROTIMLUVFEST literary festival will be held in Ostrava from 16–18 October 2024

15:00 Zbigniew Herbert – I have a door-knocker from unsuspected gardens
A meeting with the poet and translator Josef Mlejnek (CZ) to discuss a newly published Czech translation of a collection by the Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert. A discussion to mark the 100th anniversary of the poet’s birth. The guests will include the poet Jonáš Hájek, who edited the book, along with Lucie Zakopalová, an expert on Polish literature, who will also be the presenter.

16.00 Joanna Oparek (PL): Small Duties
An exploration of a singular chronicle of the violence that people commit against others at the beginning of the 21st century. This is not a mere analysis of how the perpetrators and their victims behave; the texts in the collection Small Duties show how we are fascinated by violence, how we find it impossible to tear our eyes away from the horrors that are shown. The presenter and interpreter will be the translator and poet Lenka Daňhelová.

17.00 Bálint Hárcos (HU): Confused Robbers
A discussion and workshop with Bálint Hárcos, a popular Hungarian author of children’s books, whose Confused Robbers was recently published in a Czech translation by Robert Svoboda. Recommended mainly to all readers who are seriously perturbed by the following problems: How does a hairdresser specializing in lions’ manes work, and what do frisky squirrels have in common with the organization of ceremonial marches? Is it possible for a kite to never even think of flying? Have you heard about the scarf that can take its owner to New York by air? Presented by Tereza Roháčková and Hana Helebrantová, with Robert Svoboda interpreting between Hungarian and Czech.

18.00 Peter Šulej (SK): Phytopaleontology
A meeting with the poet and prose writer Peter Šulej to discuss his dystopian novel, a vision of a cyberpunk version of Bratislava in 2087. Presented by Miroslav Zelinský.
