Cathedral-builders

11. 3. 2025

4:30 p.m.– 6 p.m.

Lecture by Marek Zágora. Only in Czech.

The lecture will be streamed live on Facebooku and the gallery’s YouTube channel.

When we hear the word “cathedral”, most people think of a structure like the monumental St. Vitus’ Cathedral at Prague Castle – the most important sacred building in Czech history and one of the symbols of Czech statehood. However, some historians see cathedrals as a general symbol of an entire epoch, while others view them as a stage for historical events – a stage on which the curtain has not yet come down, so that the phenomenon of the cathedral lives on. However, we can also see the cathedral as a “Gesamtkunstwerk” – a work of art that combines many art forms and displays all the characteristic features of Western Christianity. The lecture will bring to life the colourful world of cathedral-building – from the origins of these exceptional structures to the various functions that these symbolism-rich buildings had – and continue to have. The lecture is based on an exhibition of the same name that was held at the Czech Museum of Silver in Kutná Hora to mark 25 years since the town’s historic core (including the Gothic church of St. Barbara and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
