Kateřina Šedá’s monograph presents the work of an artist who has proved herself able to break free from the monolithic force of habit and stereotypical human behaviours. Her methods vary depending on the location where she works and the community she encounters. It is difficult to find a way of displaying and presenting Šedá’s projects, as they are always most valuable at the moment of the event itself. This book therefore strives to give the most precise possible descriptions of Šedá’s events, including photographic documents and comments by participants. Each of her projects is so different that there is no point seeking parallels among them as a route to understanding her work.

The structure of the publication reflects the unique, solitary nature of Šedá’s individual events. The guiding principle is the faithful and accurate presentation of the artist’s work; for this reason, each of the presented projects forms a separate chapter with a clearly delineated beginning and end, offering information and participants’ comments. The selection of projects is based on personal preferences. Each chapter in the book deliberately features a different graphic design, accentuating the uniqueness of the particular project and reflecting the variety and broad thematic scope of Šedá’s work. The chosen graphic form matches the nature of each event, reinforcing the authenticity of the presentation. After presenting 14 key projects, there is a shorter section containing more concise information on a further 14 projects. There are also English translations of the introductory parts of each main chapter, which function as summaries. The final part of the book presents the opinions of several art experts. The artist’s own comments on the events (as well as on more general topics) appear throughout the publication in the form of excerpts from interviews; these inputs create a subtle dialogue between the artist and the reader, and Šedá’s frank and open answers to the interviewers’ questions make readers feel as if they are communicating directly with her. The interview format is also an ideal platform for addressing general questions related with the life and work of artists, as well as for considering various other issues that are often not raised explicitly. The interview sections help readers not only to understand the genesis of Šedá’s works, but also to trace how her fascination with particular themes and topics – the pillars of her oeuvre – has developed over the course of her career. Her words also reach a deeper level; they reveal her existential priorities, motivations, values, and the importance of relationships and collaborations for her.
