Maryla Sobek / Taller

This publication presents the work of Maryla Sobek, one of the most distinctive figures on the contemporary artistic scene. Currently a professor in Montreal, Sobek approaches clothing design in a distinctively analytical manner. She draws primarily on carefully selected architectonic typologies (originating with the Dogon and Tugon people), which she is able to apply in order to develop concepts for her own designs. Clothes inspired by these sources become genuine works of art, melding the proportions of distinct functional modes to create surprising parallels between architecture and clothing. The publication presents six outstanding examples of Maryla Sobek’s work, accompanied by numerous sketches, photographs and texts explaining the genesis of her approach to design.

In Czech only.

The catalogue was published to accompany an exhibition held at the House of Art (Dům umění) from 24. 8. to 21. 10. 2012, presented by the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava in collaboration with the Association for Ostrava Culture (SPOK – Spolek pro ostravskou kulturu).

The exhibition had previously been presented at the Maison de la culture Maisonneuve in Montréal (9. 9. – 2. 10. 2010), the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław (14. – 21. 11. 2010), and the Palace of Art in Krakow (24. 11. – 28. 12. 2010).
