Jurečkova obrazárna (Jureček’s Gallery)

This publication was issued to mark the 80th anniversary of the foundation of Ostrava’s House of Art (Dům umění). The foundation of this gallery was a milestone in the development of the region’s art scene – and it can also be viewed as a driving force behind the emergence of a more sophisticated cultural landscape in Ostrava and the region as a whole. The catalogue includes reproductions from the gallery’s collections, as well as texts tracing the roots of the gallery and bio-notes on the artists whose work was displayed there. The origins of the gallery are inextricably connected with two figures: František Jureček and Alois Sprušil. Jureček was a building contractor and an enthusiastic art collector; his generous donation laid the foundations for the gallery’s collection. Sprušil was a court official and a noted art-lover who carefully and systematically expanded the collection.
