Gallia Romanica

This publication presents Romanesque architecture and sculpture in France, using photographs mainly from the 1950s to uncover the secrets of this mysterious style exemplified by 32 different structures and works of art. The buildings presented include the pilgrimage church of Sainte-Foy in Conques and the cathedral in Le Puy. There is also a fascinating chapter on the Romanesque style in what is now the Czech Republic (written by Marie Šťastná). The exhibition “Gallia Romanica: French Romanesque architecture and sculpture in the photographs of Zygmunt Świechowski” is based on 58 black-and-white photographs mostly taken in the 1950s when Świechowski first visited France – prior to the extensive restoration work that was carried out in the second half of the 20th century.

Czech publication with an introduction in French.

This catalogue was published to accompany the exhibition “Gallia Romanica: French Romanesque architecture and sculpture in the photographs of Zygmunt Świechowski” organized by the Gallery of Fine Arts at Ostrava’s House of Art (Dům umění) from 12 August – 20 September 2009, the Felix Jenewein Gallery (Kutná Hora) at Vlašský Dvůr from 7–31 October 2009, and the National Heritage Institute (Brno branch) at Galerie Sklepení from 23 March – 15 May 2010, in collaboration with the Association for Ostrava Culture (SPOK – Spolek pro ostravskou kulturu) and the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław.
