Few institutions have such a fascinating history as Ostrava’s Gallery of Fine Arts and its collections. The gallery’s story began with František Jureček (1868–1925), a local building contractor who was also a passionate art collector. Over the years, Jureček built up a valuable collection of artworks, and his love of Ostrava led him to donate his collection (comprising over 120 works) to the city. The Jureček collection provided a powerful incentive to create a worthy venue where it could be exhibited permanently – and thus the idea of building the House of Art was born. This exhibition presents a selection of works from Jureček’s remarkable collection.
