The opening will take place on Tuesday 21 January at 5 p.m.

Tereza Samková (1996) draws and paints visual poetry. Her landscapes are full of relationships. At the most elemental level, she explores the relationship between a human being (the painter) and the space that the painter experiences. Space is an important agent in her visual communication. She reframes the inner part of her paintings with a kind of architecture which sometimes creates mysterious recesses charged with the unspoken, and at other times helps to anchor an ephemeral atmosphere which without these structures would dissolve in an instant. Her paintings exist on the boundary between the rational and the irrational, geometric and organic forms, mysterious recesses and levitating fragments. The paintings and objects at the exhibition reflect the features of the lived environment in the Czech-Polish border region where Samková and her partner live. These may be a branch of an elder tree, the internal structure of a driveway gate, or a ring of stones around a firepit.

The Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava is opening up a space that used to be a lecture hall as a new venue for short-term independent interventions and projects by young and middle-generation artists. The aim is to create a kind of lab for experimenting, playing and creativity – all of which are natural attributes of Ostrava’s young artists. The concept will further enhance the gallery’s long-standing collaboration with the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music at the University of Ostrava, offering students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of the art scene. We are confident that the broad platform offered by the faculty (encompassing not only fine art, but also production and performing arts) will help to create a multidisciplinary, open community environment. The first exhibition will present the work of the painter Tereza Samková.
